Frequently Asked Questions

Which tax regime should I pick for FY 2026-27?

Compare both regimes with your actual deductions in this calculator. Generally the new regime wins below roughly ₹4-5 lakh of deductions; the old regime can win with heavy HRA, home-loan interest, 80C, and NPS.

Does HRA exemption apply in the new tax regime?

No. HRA, 80C, 80D, LTA, and most Section 80 deductions are old-regime only. The new regime allows only the standard deduction and employer NPS contribution.

Is surcharge included in this calculator?

No. Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh income (10% over ₹50 lakh, 25% over ₹1 crore). Add it manually if your income crosses those thresholds.

What is the standard deduction under the new tax regime for FY 2026-27?

₹75,000 for salaried taxpayers, applied before slab rates. The old regime keeps the ₹50,000 standard deduction. Pensioners get ₹75,000 too under the new regime since FY 2025-26.

What is the Section 87A rebate in the new regime?

Up to ₹60,000 rebate when total taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, making tax effectively zero up to about ₹12.75 lakh for salaried taxpayers after the standard deduction. Above ₹12 lakh the rebate phases out and only marginal relief applies.

Can I switch between old and new regimes every year?

Salaried taxpayers without business income can switch every year by informing their employer or choosing the regime while filing. Taxpayers with business or professional income can switch back to the old regime only once in a lifetime.

Does the new regime allow home-loan interest deduction?

Generally no for self-occupied property. An exception exists for a let-out property under Section 24(b), but not the ₹2 lakh self-occupied deduction the old regime allows.

What documents do I need to claim 80C under the old regime?

Proof of each investment: LIC premium receipts, PPF passbook updates, ELSS or NSC statements, children's tuition receipts, home-loan principal certificate from the bank, EPF contribution statements, and health-insurance premium receipts for 80D.

Is corporate tax or capital gains covered by this calculator?

No. It covers resident individual salary and deductions. Short-term and long-term capital gains have separate rates and should be calculated separately.

What is the health and education cess rate?

4 percent on total income tax plus surcharge. It applies equally under both regimes and is always added last.
